Simple tips to boost career confidence

A lot of individuals out there live by the idea of faking it until they make it. But when it comes to developing career confidence, it’s not as easy as it might seem just to appear brave. A lack of confidence is one of the biggest factors withholding people from excelling in their careers, which is why you can’t fake it out there, you simply have to make it. As we head back to work after the Covid-19 lockdown, it’s more important than ever to be confident in your capabilities.

The good news is that there’s an easy way to overcome workplace fears, and the answer lies in role models who inspire confidence in the workplace. One-third of women feel more confident in their careers after being inspired by role models such as Theresa May.

How to improve your career  confidence

We’ve mentioned it before, and we’ll say it again: role models or mentors can be a great source of confidence. But aside from just having someone to look up to and be inspired by, there are quite a few other ways in which you can up your confidence levels in the office. Here are some tips:

Make a plan and stick to your guns

It’s hard to know exactly where to start with a plan for increasing your career confidence because it’s such a broad brief to meet. That’s why you need to tackle it by breaking it down into easily-digestible chunks. Worried about getting your point across in a meeting? Set yourself a target of raising three points at the next staff meeting and then build on that. You also want to ensure you have someone supporting you in your cause. When your goals are in line with those of your manager or a colleague, it’ll be much easier to keep the grand goal in mind.

Develop your confidence brand

You need to develop your own kind of confidence because unfortunately, it’s not a one-size-fits-all deal. Professional confidence is all about listening more than you speak and using all interactions as new opportunities to learn from those around you. Identify your personal roadblocks and then find ways to overcome them.

Celebrate your strengths

Dwelling on the negative aspects of yourself can be a major confidence breaker in the workplace. In order to restore the balance in the way you think about yourself, you need to track and celebrate your success.

Find a great role model

A powerful mentor can make a huge impact on your confidence levels at work. You can learn so much from a strong, inspiring leader. Not only can you learn about dealing with conflict, but you can also pick up a lot of valuable oration skills. If you can’t find one at work, consider listening to inspirational speakers on TedX or SheSays.
